Keynote and Invited Speakers:

Raja Sengupta

University of California Berkeley, USA.
Title: Of Henry Ford and Igor Sikorsky: Low Altitude Aviation and the Automobile. [+]

Abstract: Transportation is either hub-2-hub, hub-2-door, or door-2-door. Hub-2-hub can be road, rail, marine, or air, but the other two have been exclusively road in the industrial age, that is until the recent transformation in aviation. Today's low altitude aircraft, aka drones, are the first viable alternative for hub-2-door or door-2-door transport since the industrial automobile (Henry Ford) put these two types of mobility beyond the reach of the horse. I will discuss this kind of air travel, moving people or goods hub-2-door or door-2-door, and whether such travel is sensible given the reign of the automobile. It is if we can resolve exciting economic and technology challenges.

Bio: Raja Sengupta is Professor in the Systems Engineering Program, Civil & Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. He holds an EECS Phd from the Universithy of Michigan. His research has spanned automated cars, drones, connected cars, smartphone Apps for Economics & Transportation, wireless networking, and control theory. He likes to do research with industry and get it into the marketplace. He holds car-to-road networking patents with Toyota, a UAV patent with BAE Aerospace, and has car-to-car networking contributions standardized by the SAE into J2945. He created technology for the successful start-up automatic.com and is now founder and CEO of responsiblerobotics.com. He is currently advisor to the World Bank, recipient of USDOT's Connected Vehicle Technology award 2011, UC Berkeley's Energy and Climate Lectures Innovation Award 2014, and has authored over a hundred papers spanning control theory, networking, drones, and transportation.

Sriram Gopalakrishnan

Valeo India R&D Center, Chennai, India.
Title: Towards affordable e-mobility. [+]

Abstract: This talk will present how the electrification of powertrain is developing in the next decade and why specific affordable technologies are mandatory to allow massive electrification and consequently, massive benefit on air pollution. A comprehensive market analysis will be provided, regarding regulations in major countries, effect of Dieselgate, trends in battery costs, as well as proprietary market forecast for the world and for India with the distribution between different kind of hybrid and electric solutions. A specific focus will be made on cost benchmark and TCO benchmark between electric and traditional cars to emphasize the challenges in terms of cost reduction. A specific insight on Urban mobility will be given, to demonstrate how electrification triggers a blossoming offer in that space, and what are the main opportunities as well as new market segments. 48V technology will be then demonstrated as a key lever to offer affordable electrification for urban mobility segments, and several kinds of 48V vehicles will be showcased as typical examples. Finally we will make a focus on how the “make in India” spirit would fit well to address the challenge of affordable e-mobility.

Bio: Sriram G is heading the Valeo India R&D Center, Chennai. He has 30+ years of experience in Automotive field. Under his leadership, the Valeo R&D center in India has grown significantly, contributing to the Valeo’s world wide R&D efforts to bring innovative solutions. Bhargava Rama Chilukuri

Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India.
Title: Study of Mixed Traffic: Challenges and Opportunities. [+]

Abstract: With increasing traffic congestion in the Indian cities leading to longer delays and increasing pollution, there has been an interest to develop effective traffic management strategies. Unfortunately, most of the traffic science literature deals with homogeneous vehicular traffic with lane-based movement and is inadequate to represent the traffic conditions in the south Asian countries, especially India. This presentation will attempt to highlight the research challenges and opportunities associated with the study of the mixed traffic. The first part of the talk will present the state-of-the-art research and practice of traffic data collection, modelling, and analysis with respect to the mixed traffic. The later part of the presentation will describe the shortcomings of the current research/practice and identify the potential research problems for academia and industry. The last part will highlight some of the research activities in the study of mixed traffic by the transportation group at the IIT Madras. The purpose of the presentation will be to stimulate interest of the research community and promote collaboration for developing solutions for the mixed traffic conditions.

Bio: Bhargava R. Chilukuri was born and brought up in Khammam, Telangana. He earned his B.Tech. (hons) from the IIT Kharagpur, M.S. from the University of Utah, and Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to his Ph.D., Dr. Bhargava has worked for several years in the industry in the USA and obtained his Professional Engineer license. He joined IIT Madras as an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering in December 2016. His areas of interest include traffic flow theory and modelling, traffic control of highways and arterials, and networks.
